How do you measure success? As yogis we are taught to be non-attached to the fruits of our actions. On first hearing this, it seems a foreign and actually bizarre concept. I shouldn't care about what happens as a result of what I do? Isn't that sort of contrary? Well yes, it is contrary to the common notion.

It's not an issue of caring or not. A longer view puts the popular opinion to the test. Look back on your own life. Were those things that seemed to work well the best things that happened to you? Some may have even been among the easiest times of your life - but were they the best? I don't contend that you can only learn from things that didn't go as planned - but certainly we can learn and grow as much or more when they didn't.

More importantly, in a spiritual sense, we often don't actually know what is best for us. Living on this planet, we are not at a high enough place to really know. God does. Putting our trust in God can include trusting that whatever happens is what we need. How we respond is the larger issue.

One of the benefits of this approach is that you can be happy - regardless of the results of your actions. We try our best - and stay happy no matter what. I'd say that's worth working on.

AUM: The Melody of Love - book cover

The calmer you become, the more you'll hear and feel the vastness of vibratory creation within you. One's consciousness increases with expanding, all-spreading AUM to the shores of Infinity.

Inspiration from Kriyananda

Swami Kriyananda As We Have Known Him - book cover

“The relationship with God as Friend is in some ways the sweetest,” Swamiji writes in his commentary on the Bhagavad Gita. “When one...thinks of God as Friend, there steals into the heart that sweet confidence by which one feels, 'But of course You love me! I am Yours; You are mine. How could either of us ever turn away from the other? We are one!”
