I was in my 20s, sitting in the sun in Boston Common, when a Hari Krishna fellow explained to me that God had hidden Himself in little bits in all of us - and that our task was to find our way back to wholeness in Him. I thought, “That’s it, isn’t it! There it is. That’s the truth.” I haven’t changed my view on that since.
It is a foundational thought that leads to many others. One is: That means that God is in everyone. Part of my finding my way back home will be through recognizing God in everyone else. Ananda folk often say, “God is the doer.” That means God is the doer through others - not just through me!
If I recognize that everyone is at his or her core an expression of God - how can I be anything but loving and compassionate? Look for God in their eyes, as Yogananda has taught us.
We all have noticed that once we understand someone's story - we understand why he or she acts as they act. Knowing the stories always seems to make it easier to be understanding. If we could expand this to recognize that everyone does have a story that explains why they behave the way they do - could we just move straight to compassion for all? When it's hard to do this, we can practice by imagining what that person's story might be. You may actually be able to intuit it. Even if you don't get it exactly, you will have reached a point where you can feel compassion.
We are all children of God, living out our karma. Let's love one another as all the great ones have taught - so that we can sooner reunite as One.
Blessings on your path,
Timothy

Inspiration from Yogananda
“A good rule to follow in life is to be other-minded. Here is what I mean:
No matter what you behold, try to be conscious of that other, greater reality behind what you are beholding. “No matter with whom you are speaking, imagine that other One, communicating
with you through that person’s words and gestures. Whatever work you are doing, feel that other Presence nearby, watching you, guiding you, giving you strength. When looking into peoples eyes, see God there, touching you through their consciousness. With every event in your life, watch it as it unfolds. Ask yourself, What is God trying to teach me through this experience?”

Consideration for Others
“.. by unkindness we can never please God, who is all Kindness itself. Sensitivity to others is a way of self-expansion. One truly achieves freedom in himself when he can respect their realities, because he is wholly at peace with his own.”
Prayer
Divine Mother, I worship Thee in all Thy forms, both ignorant and wise. Finding Thee within, may I behold Thee enshined in omnipresence.
