Long ago I read that Aboriginal Australians would die if put into prison, because their brains were wired in such a way that they couldn't imagine the situation would change. While current reading suggests that this is not actually true, the idea always fascinated me. I've observed that most of us react similarly to the people in this tale. When we're in pain, it's hard to recall that we once felt well and likely will again. When the situation around us seems intolerable, it can be impossible to imagine things will improve again. Even in circumstances when we know a big change for the better will be coming the very next day or week, it can be hard to picture that. Yogananda and Kriyananda taught that life is filled equally with ups and downs. We can gain a greater sense of equanimity when we accept this, and stop strongly reacting to the circumstances of the moment. Paradoxically, you can live more in the moment by taking a longer view! We can level out life's waves by not attaching to events, whether we perceive them as good or bad. Hold onto something higher. God's grace is always there; we can refocus ourselves to connect with it. With grace, we can live happily in the present. And that is where we always are. May you find joy in every circumstance. "As often as you fail," the Master used to say, "get up and try again. God will never let you down, so long as you don't let Him down, and so long as you make the effort." "From a mountaintop, one sees clearly the whole countryside, and also the open sky above. From the heights it is natural to want to soar even higher, far above the earth. In the fog-bound valley below, however, the most that one aspires to may be only to climb a bit higher." from Conversations with Yogananda You Can Change Your Brain and Transform Your Life Self-Transformation through Superconsciousness October 4 - 6, 2013 Peter Van Houten, M.D., leads this fascinating, encouraging, and deeply beneficial weekend.
