Dear Friend,
We are taught to accept what comes to us. We are also taught to develop will power, and to work to align our will with God’s. It seems some of us relate more easily to expressing will power, and some more readily go with the flow of accepting what comes.
Dealing with illness can raise an interesting example to explore how will power and acceptance might interact. One of our friends, who has been experiencing many health problems, recently was saying how he tends to think accepting it is best, but his wife suggests that getting better is a question of will power. I found myself wanting to pray, and praying, very forcefully to God to heal this friend – who has dedicated his life to sharing spiritual teachings – so that he could focus more on doing that.
I often think that I don’t really want to pray for things for myself – except for God to bring me home. But recently I was in seclusion – and not feeling well. I was rereading Autobiography of a Yogi. I realized how often disciples went to one of the masters to ask for a healing, for themselves or more often for a loved one – and how frequently the masters responded by bringing about a healing. It certainly didn’t seem that they had any problem being asked for healing.
This has led me to think that asking God to favor us with something (or at least something ‘good’ or for good reason) is fine. We can ask – and let the Great Ones decide.
Or at least it can be fine, as long as we separate the intent of our prayers from the response – and joyfully accept whatever God sends us.
Blessings to you,
Timothy

Inspiration from Yogananda
“The Divine Mother is busy with Her housework of creation. The baby devotee cries, and She gives him a toy to play with – riches, perhaps, or name, or fame. If he cries again, She gives him another toy. But if the baby throws everything away and cries for Her love alone, She picks him up at last and whispers to him lovingly, ‘If you really want only Me, and not My gifts, then come. Be with Me forever on my lap of infinity.’”
