Keywords: Yoga for MS (October 2002)
ORIGINAL QUESTION:
From Karen Barbarick, Auburn, CA
I will be teaching yoga to a Multiple Sclerosis support group in Auburn starting the 10th. If anyone has suggestions on working with MS it would be greatly appreciated. They are at various levels of mobility so I need poses that would be for everyone there are 7 to 10 people. I figure energization and breathing for sure.
Send advice or experientials this way?
ANSWERS:
From Lisa Powers, at The Expanding Light
Regarding teaching to MS patients, or anyone with limited mobility or a group that needs a lot of interaction with the teacher.
Not much to offer but it would be good to keep your class at a small enough number that you can be very present with everyone. 6 is a good number to begin with, especially if you are getting used to a new situation of people that could need a bit of coaching.

Karen,
I went to a yoga seminar in Yellow Springs, OH in July. The teacher was Sam Dworkis. He has MS and has successfully used yoga to manage his symptoms. He has written a book called Recovery Yoga designed for people with chronic illnesses. You can also visit his website at www.extensionyoga.com. There is a wealth of information there as well.
Good luck,
Jo

Hi Karen,
I have some experience teaching people with MS. It is true, they are in varying levels of mobility. I found that standing postures are not very useful for most, due to balance problems and wobbly legs. The energization exercises done sitting would work well. But there is a terrific reference you should be aware of. A 20-year yoga teacher, who was stricken with MS himself, has written a book called Recovery Yoga (a Practical guide for chronically ill, injured and post-operative people). He has other books, as well. His name is Sam Dworkis. Check out his website at www.extensionyoga.com.
Best wishes for a successful experience with this group.
Namaste'
