Ananda Yoga brings hatha yoga back to its original spiritual essence.

Keywords: Yoga instructional audio tape (December 2003)

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

I am looking for an articulately done and easy to follow beginning hatha yoga instructional audio tape for a visually impaired student. Any suggestions?

Blessings,

Julia Clothier

ANSWERS:

From Savitri:

I would recommend our new "Sadhana" tape by Barbara Bingham. Yes, presently it exists only in video or DVD format, but I suspect it would be just as easily followed by only listening to it. This also might be true other of our videos such "Ananda Yoga for Busy People". If you could, it would probably best for YOU to try it out with eyes shut and see if it is instructive enough without the visual. Or do it along with your visually impaired student at least once and pause it when you can tell that they don't understand what is needing to be doneto instruct him or her as needed.

One other idea: with the Ananda Course in Self-Realization, Part II, you receive a guided hatha yoga audio session on the accompanying CD (along with a talk on meditation and a guided meditationall led by Swami Kriyananda). The beauty of this guided audio yoga session is the powerful vibrations that Swami puts into it. The down side is that it is somewhat advancedmight not be appropriate for a beginner. Again if you went through it with your student, you could suggest which postures to leave out or modify. Actually, this was the yoga postures audio tape I began with some 30 years ago; and even as a beginner, I found it to be really great. I think you probably got this CD along with your Art and Science of Raja Yoga book, the text book for YTT? If not let us know and we'll help you figure out how to get it.

Blessings and Joyful Holidays!

From Jackie Doumanian:

Dear Julia,

I have an audio tape I did for my students. I'll send it to you if you want to try it out and see if it works.

From Susan Hayes:

Dear Julia:

My name is Susan Hayes, and I am a 1999 graduate of AYTT. My e-mail address is: susan@mountaintopyoga.com .

I could make you a copy of a great 60 minute audiotape that I bought by mail order, after seeing the teacher on a TV show, back in the 1980's (when audiocassette was the IN thing, after we got rid of 8-track tapes). I don't know if it's available for purchase anymore. There is a gentle, 30-minute yoga session on each side. Let me know where to send it, and I'll mail it pronto.

I'd be interested in hearing about how you teach yoga to the visually impaired.

Cheers!

From Gyandev:

In addition to the above excellent suggestions, let me suggest that you make your own tape for this person. That way, your student will get exactly what's right for him/her, postures-wise. You could get together and do a one-on-one, and tape it. You probably know someone with a reasonably good tape recorder. It's worth a try. Good luck.
