Whenever I lead Yogananda’s Energization Exercises, I use his prayer which ends with the words, “Oh, eternal youth of body and mind, abide within me forever and ever.” As the years roll by, I ponder more deeply what “eternal youth of body and mind” means. As I watch myself and my spiritual friends age, I realize that eternal youth is knowing how to work with life force, which Energization Exercises teach us, and also becoming an ever clearer channel for divine joy.
In the last years of his life, Swami Kriyananda’s body faced many challenges. But when Swami gave an inspirational talk, he seemed to emanate bliss. All the physical infirmities would vanish, and he was vibrant and strong in broadcasting his uplifting message. Clearly, he was practicing what Yogananda advised: “Keeping yourself smiling from within, pulsating with joy, ever ready to serve, and spiritually ambitious in helping others – all these keep the body constantly supplied with fresh Cosmic Energy drawn into the body through the door of the medulla oblongata.” From How to Achieve Glowing Health and Vitality by Paramhansa Yogananda.
