Have you noticed that feeding desires tends to increase those desires? Does eating a piece of candy really satisfy you – or is what happens that you want more candy?
I do better when I resist the initial temptation than when I fool myself by thinking “I’ll just have (or do) a little.” I’ve tested this theory by applying it to different circumstances. I don’t think there are any in which “Just a little” actually satisfies a longing. It seems always to increase it.
I’m not suggesting that you shouldn’t eat a little candy. Or that you shouldn’t enjoy your life. And you probably have more willpower than I do. I’m only suggesting that we shouldn’t kid ourselves, which I think you’ll agree is so easy to do.
