Concentration and Purification of the Mind

December 2012: Eight-hour Christmas meditation at Ananda Village.
After 4 hours of meditation, I was inspired to recite mentally the Gayatri mantra. The Gayatri mantra is considered to be the most sacred mantra of the Vedas. It is chanted as a prayer for wisdom and illumination.

Using my mala to count, I started. After about 12 repetitions, I felt that my mind was getting purified. It took me about 45 minutes to recite it 108 times. My mind was clear and uplifted.

A wonderful way to cleanse your restless thoughts and mind is to repeat a mantra.

Mantra is an ancient technique for attuning oneself to the cosmic vibration, which permeates all of creation. Mantra is more than prayer, more than a word-formula: it is a formula of sound. You don’t need to understand the words to be profoundly influenced by the power of these sounds.

Anytime you find yourself agitated, repeat a mantra for at least 10 minutes and see what happens.
