Apprenticeship Program

3-month minimum stay
Starting: May 1 – August 1, 2014

The Apprenticeship program is an in-depth, intensive study of natural building and natural living, in combination with raja yoga classes, daily meditation, yoga, and support for inner growth. As part of the Institute’s requirements, all apprentices will start with one to two weeks of service and classes at The Expanding Light. During time we will have classes on Natural Building, simple living techniques, community living, yoga, and meditation. This is to help each apprentice understand and realize the potential of cooperative living and Natural Building.

The Natural Living School participants join our program to learn more about natural building, the yogic path, and meditation, as well as to deepen and explore their spiritual life, and to experience life in an ashram environment. We honor your spiritual quest, and your desire to learn to live a more natural life.

Natural Living School Apprentices participate in the day-to-day activities that are integral to the natural building projects and the permaculture gardens. They work 40 hours per week:

• 24 hours per week will be devoted to Natural Building
• 12 hours per week will be a service program at The Expanding Light, Ananda’s Yoga and Meditation retreat
• 4 hours per week will be learning and working in the permaculture garden.

In exchange for service at The Expanding Light, you will have the opportunity to participate in The Art & Science of Raja Yoga classes, meditation classes, daily sadhanas, three amazing vegetarian meals per day, and a full camping site.

The apprenticeship is for a maximum of 3 months, with a possible extension of 3 more on approval, which will be determined case by case. The main focus of the apprenticeship program will be:

• To teach each apprentice all aspects of natural building, from design to natural finishes
• To gain hands-on experience with natural building, sustainable living, and permaculture gardening
• To support the spirit within each apprentice, and help you build a solid foundation for inner growth. The apprenticeship program is not just about natural building and natural living, it is also about awakening inner potential and gaining confidence to be able to fulfill your dreams.
• All aspects of natural building will be covered, no matter how long the apprentice stays or when they come, but actual hands-on experience will be determined by the length and timing of the apprentice’s stay.

The cost is $650 per month, which includes accommodations and food. There is also a one-time payment of $400 to cover educational expenses; this is required when you register and is non-refundable.

The apprenticeship program is on a month-by-month approval, based on review between you and the staff. You may be asked to leave the program, or you may choose to leave the program anytime that either you or we feel participation is no longer beneficial.

We are only accepting 6 apprentices at one time.
